From Kochi, we travelled south to Kovalam, a five-hour taxi ride from Kochi. We arrived at around four o'clock in time to unpack and relax for a light meal in a restaurant overlooking the beach that is beautifully nestled in a cove. Many restaurants and shops line the curved street along this cove; it is a tourist haven. One feels locked in this cove as it is a long and gradual climb to the main streets of this town.
During our ten-day stay in Kovalam we briefly explored the main streets of the town; it was all about R&R. From atop the lighthouse; see picture below.
Our highlight was a day trip to Kanyakumari which is located at the southernmost point of India. During our two-hour drive we saw different scenes of the Western Ghats mountain range.
We boarded the ferry to visit the two monument islands that signify the importance of the gushing three bodies of water colliding into each other; the Bay of Bengal, the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean. It was a rough ferry ride.
We visited both islands and were delighted to look far south towards the Equator and beyond. We were informed that when the weather is perfect and at the right time, one can see the sunrise, sunset and moon rise at the same time.
Safely back in Kanyakumari we visited the Gandhi Memorial Mandapam; a spot where the urn of Gandhi's ashes is placed for pubic viewing. The nearby beach boasts the presence of multi-coloured sands.
Our winter escape came to an end when we landed in Toronto the last week of March.
